When and how to replace water filter cartridges

June 20, 20264 min read

Thinking the job is done once the filter is installed is a mistake. When cartridges reach the end of their life, they stop purifying — and sometimes even release accumulated contaminants back into the water.

Replacement intervals

Mechanical (polypropylene) cartridge — every 3–4 months. Carbon cartridges — every 6 months. Osmotic membrane — every 2–3 years. Mineralizer — once a year. With very hard water, shorten the intervals by 20–30%.

How do you know it's time?

Three signs: the water flow has noticeably slowed, an off taste or odor has appeared, or scale is showing up in the kettle again. If you notice even one — check the cartridges.

Can I replace them myself?

You can replace mechanical and carbon cartridges yourself — just shut off the water and open the housings with the service wrench. The membrane is better left to a technician: installed incorrectly, the system loses pressure.

BMS Group offers a cartridge replacement service — give us a call and our technician will come and swap everything in 30 minutes.
